Export Controls Advisory Committee (ECAC):
In today’s business climate, more than ever, Exporters should take the opportunity to become conversant with the rules and regulations involved in exporting strategic goods, arms and dual use equipment. For those new to the subject, applying for an export licence can appear complicated and confusing but if you follow the rules, complying with export controls is a straightforward process. IT’S THE EXPORTER’S RESPONSIBILITY TO FIND OUT.
you or your representatives are encouraged to get involved in the annual programme of awareness seminars & workshops organised by the Export Controls Organisation (ECO). Details of the current programme are available by clicking here. Those wishing to organise one of these events at their premises, should contact:- Jo Guthrie ECO tel: 020 7215 0647 Jo.Guthrie@dti.gsi.gov.uk
There is also a CD-Rom available for any exporter involved in controlled shipments. To obtain copies, please contact Jo Guthrie ECO tel: 020 7215 0647 Jo.Guthrie@dti.gsi.gov.uk
Certificates of Origin
These are often required:
- To meet customs requirements in the importing state
- To meet ‘quota’ requirements imposed by the importing country
- To comply with banking requirements
- For other official and commercial reasons.
In the UK, the officially designated authorities for the issue of EC Certificates of Origin are Chambers of Commerce. The service is available to all businesses in the UK at reasonable cost, although Chamber members receive beneficial rates.
Export Finance
With more people trading across borders, payments systems and cultures, payment for exports is as vital as ever and increasingly complicated.
There are four main methods of payment for exports depending on the size and circumstances of your company:
- Cash in advance - the ideal
- Open account - if you know your buyer well
- Collect on Delivery - more security where you have yet to establish a relationship
- Letters of credit - security for the buyer and seller.
Through their accumulated experience and training, BCC's Accredited Chambers of Commerce can advise you on your options and help you liaise with your bank/finance company/factoring company/accountant to ensure you are asking the correct questions and know what to look out for.
